Robert Caslen, who was a leading candidate for president of #UofSC says protesters took his comments about sexual assault out of contexthttps://t.co/isvM9sbc0v
— Lucas Daprile (@LucasDaprile) April 29, 2019
Well would you look at that. This goes to show that facts don’t matter to students AND faculty at @UofSC https://t.co/in8xMHlZRw
— Cazzy Man (@JCasman09) April 29, 2019
Gov. @henrymcmaster called Ret. Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen today to apologize for the "shabby way" he was treated by @UofSC during the presidential search and asked the former West Point superintendent to apply again, McMaster chief of staff @TreyWalker says. 1/2
— Andy Shain (@AndyShain) April 30, 2019
But Caslen said Friday, after students and faculty protested and @UofSC trustees voted to reopen the president search, that he had no plans to apply again: "There was a lot of resistance." 2/2 https://t.co/Wqfn8x3JV3
— Andy Shain (@AndyShain) April 30, 2019

— G (@Opa_opa_yall) April 30, 2019
Man. McMaster can't catch a break. His man Caslen got shut down and didn't two of his appointment nominees get rejected in the SC legislature today? Maybe McMaster has a poor judge of talent & fit when hiring.
— DJ Polite (@Polite_DPJ) April 30, 2019
What a shame the Board caved to the “mob rules” and did not follow through with the selection of Caslen as the new President of U of SC. Sad day when liberal biased students drive the selection process. It’s like the inmates running the asylum. Which is what we will soon have.
— FuzzyF3 (@FuzzyF3) April 29, 2019
I've got six grandchildren (so far) in South Carolina. If Berkley and Stanford "This is what Democray looks like" adolescents can pressure USC to reject General Caslen, then I'm looking for another place for my family. @UofSC
— Bishop Mark Nordstrom (@ArmyChap) April 28, 2019
You are truly missing out on Caslen. As someone who has listened to him speak about sexual assault NUMEROUS times, I'd say your concerns are off the mark.
— Jake (@jakespelce) April 28, 2019
Thank you for taking the time to interview and speak to dad about the issue and allowing him to tell the truth when no one at @UofSC bothered to ask him about it. #standwithcaslen

To all the students getting bullied for supporting dad the last few days at @UofSC you are the real hero’s. Say no to bullying.

Hoping the @UofSC board doesn’t succumb to immature demands of .2% of students.
Caslen is well qualified, and was a popular leader of students in his previous job as the head of a University.
— Alex Stroman (@alexstroman) April 26, 2019
I guarantee you wouldn’t want to put this to a student vote 🙂 It would be a landslide for Tate and the BoT should probably listen to that.
— Tyler Matthews (@tyler_digital) April 26, 2019
That’s not how BOT works, thankfully.
Also, as someone who was around for the Pastides selection—at the time, a “student vote” wouldn’t have gone in his favor. And he’s been the gold standard.
— Alex Stroman (@alexstroman) April 26, 2019
It’s sketchy when a card-carrying #trumpinaugural GOP spokesman gets all giddy about a finalist + defensive of the closed door process just as students start to use their voice. Trying to remind them we’re in South Carolina?
— Tyler Matthews (@tyler_digital) April 26, 2019
Sketchy? I’m an alumni, with vested interest in the University?
Lol, nice try.

— Tay 🔮 (@_taybbyy) April 26, 2019
I was a cadet under Caslen for 3 years while he was the superintendent at West Point. His #1 priority was stopping sexual assault and harrassment, and he made that clear to us numerous times. On top of that, he was a phenomenal leader. You're missing out.
— Jake (@jakespelce) April 28, 2019
So they're going to demand a woman be selected? Jesus. The mob rules, as always …
— SouthCarolinaPatriot (@SCPatriotGames) April 26, 2019
did you read the article? it was about a whole lot more than “a woman must be president.” that actually wasn’t even said. 🤦🏽♀️
— #NurseDanni✨ (@pretti_and_inkd) April 27, 2019
lol it was definitely bc caslen wasnt qualified and didnt research the university and also failed to answer student questions at the forum. but they dont go here and clearly didnt watch student interviews so they wouldnt know that
— michael jackson’s red shirt (@Naja_Hough) April 27, 2019
Okay. Thank you. Clickbait headlines leading up to this.
— SouthCarolinaPatriot (@SCPatriotGames) April 27, 2019
some students were mad overall about the lack of females selected, but caslen was just a bad choice anyway. doesnt jace a phD and blamed alcohol for sexual abuse were also reasons we opposed him

This is incorrect. Some students and faculty opposed Caslen for multiple reasons (including lack of earned PhD). This was not about a single comment on one issue.
— Elise Blackwell (@EliseBlackwell) April 27, 2019
So important, not a single issue problem: unqualified in every way, if in doubt, look at his experience. Lack of knowledge about higher education was evident in everything he said. I wish him well, but not as President of @UOfSC

— AMW1965 (@amser409) April 26, 2019
the main reasons are because 1) he didnt research our university enough to know what programs we have currently, 2) when asked, could not explain his plans for sustainability and did not know what it was, 3) he blamed sexual violence on campus on alcohol

Hi Chris, can you outline why you say this, was there some info or comments made during the whole process that pointed to such a conclusion? Not attacking at all, I'm truly curious, I did not want Caslen as it seemed to me an old boys selection, but i hadn't read anything as yet
— michellea_stella (@MichelleHardee) April 27, 2019
Well, for one thing this story pointed heavily at Caslen as the favorite. And I believe he probably was. And then some folks began having a negative response to that possibility, leading to today's protest. I admit I'm speculating.https://t.co/wJyog2OnY7

Embarrassing @UofSC
Gen Caslen, can lead West Point and an Infantry division of 20000, but not a University. Petulance reigns and you missed a great opportunity. Embarrassed right now to have attended.
Maybe think the school needs a leader, not the students best friend.
— Joe Corley (@jkenn1212) April 27, 2019
No, what was embarrassing was that Gen. Caslen blamed sexual assault on binge drinking, and how he downplayed mental health by saying people need to be “menatally strong” because that’s how all of this works.
— dylan (@dylandoceti) April 27, 2019
Completely false statement you made! Caslen said “…we want to take up the contributing MEASURES toward sexual assault, particularly alcohol”. He said MEASURES…plural! Indicating he understands assault is not caused solely by alcohol. Are you so dumb you don’t understand that?

“He’s not representative of our values as an institution,” says sophomore political science and geography major Ethan Magnuson of USC presidential candidate Robert Caslen.
— The Daily Gamecock (@thegamecock) April 26, 2019
One wonders what values the university students have if they aren’t the same as a brave man who served his country, risked his life to save fellow workers in the Pentagon after 9/11, and led the best institute of higher learning for 5 years.

Look the guy quoted up on Facebook and it will all make sense haha
— Bryan (@scbeautyqueen) April 26, 2019
Saw one reason he criticized the General was support for the Contras. They were freedom fighters opposing the communists. I commanded a radar detachment that was installed in Honduras a decade earlier because of that conflict.

Who gives a rats ass?!? Professors are getting paid too much anyway. Dock their pay if they aren't teaching.
— Bobby Mack (@BobbyMa97639703) April 26, 2019
I choose to be public about my views because ✨this✨ moment is too big to be quiet. And, quite frankly, I don’t want to be at an institution where I am uninspired by the leader. I hear you saying, “who cares what you think.” Well, maybe no one. But I have a voice. I’ll use it.
— Heather Brandt (@BlondeScientist) April 25, 2019
Compared to all the candidates, Gen. Caslen demonstrated the lowest levels of knowledge of a doctorally-granting institution and its positionality in the state. This has nothing to do with a lack of a terminal degree. This has to do with reality. This has to do with preparation.
— Heather Brandt (@BlondeScientist) April 25, 2019
He did not address disinvestment in higher education. He did not address public perception of higher education. He did not address increasing tuition costs in the absence of stable funding. He told great stories. He clearly loves his family. He has military leadership experience.
— Heather Brandt (@BlondeScientist) April 25, 2019
What I am trying to say here is that he is not the one. He is not the “non-academic” savior. This morning, I was reminded by a colleague of some important #UofSC history. And I believe “those who do not understand history are doomed to repeat it” (George Santayana).
— Heather Brandt (@BlondeScientist) April 25, 2019
President James McKissick was much loved and celebrated as President of #UofSC until he died suddenly in 1944. Who followed him? Navy Rear Admiral Norman Murray Smith who held connections at the federal level. Check out how that worked out (spoiler: not well).
— Heather Brandt (@BlondeScientist) April 25, 2019
We are indeed at an inflection point. One of the four men who came to campus this week will be named the next President of #UofSC tomorrow afternoon. Let’s not repeat the mistakes of the mid-20th century. Let’s name and address structural barriers that got us here.
— Heather Brandt (@BlondeScientist) April 25, 2019
And, then, let’s move forward. Let’s do better. Let’s revisit our own biases. Let’s find common ground on which to build a better #UofSC. Let’s come together to embrace the good – and work on the challenges. Let’s not have history repeat itself. #ForeverToThee
— Heather Brandt (@BlondeScientist) April 25, 2019
If you have an opinion about the finalists for the next President of #UofSC, the deadline is 8 am on April 26 (that's tomorrow!). https://t.co/SFa2p6x6uV

How can anyone who has twice been in charge of education, including 5 years at West Point, be woefully unqualified” to lead a university? West Point provides a rigorous B.S. education where students take 18-19 hours a semester.
— Elizabeth Herring (@HerringLiz) April 27, 2019
I am reminded of a Harvard Business Review article I read long ago, which noted that the most qualified candidate is often not the best one for the position. Every candidate has unique strengths that will be brought to the table. Will be an interesting decision!

He knows better than that, especially as a retired military officer with an impressive resume. Sexual assault is not the result of binge drinking, it happens when one believes they are entitled to violating another person without their consent
— Hilton Gilbert (@HiltonEll7) April 24, 2019
The Armed Forces like to blame sexual assault on drinking. I had to write a paper on it
— dvd girl (@Trabbey2) April 25, 2019
Promoting diversity??? Ohhhh, that’s rich. In @LTGRobertCaslen’s live stream he coupled diversity w/ lowering standards by boasting how West Point didn’t do so. Duh! He also never once mentioned how standards are lowered when a dumb AF kid of Army brass wants to go to West Point

I’m an alumni, and hope they chose Caslen—the only candidate to have led a university, and quite popularly with students there.
— Alex Stroman (@alexstroman) April 26, 2019
They don't like him because he was in the military it seems. In a State article a student said that him fighting terrorists would make Muslim students "uncomfortable". Smh.
— KOB (@TheOneTrueKOB) April 26, 2019
So they don't like him because of his military experience?
— KOB (@TheOneTrueKOB) April 26, 2019
Our problems with him are numerous, but let’s start with these: he’s not remotely qualified for the job, and he says sexual assault is caused by drinking.
— Honest Cock (@CockHonest) April 26, 2019
So idk about USC, but West point takes a Congressionally mandated survey every two years on SA/SH. It finds that over 50% of all SA incidents involved excessive alcohol. Sorry, but the data backs Caslen.
— Jake (@jakespelce) April 28, 2019
A. A survey? Asking who what? That’s not “data.”
B. We won. He’s gone. He’s never coming back. #cantbeourpresident— Honest Cock (@CockHonest) April 28, 2019
A. Asking every single cadet here, and at each of the other service academies, about their experiences. B. Your loss.
— Jake (@jakespelce) April 28, 2019
So a group in which the overwhelming majority is rich white dudes? I’m shocked that they would perpetuate the lie that booze made them do it. We’ll be just fine. We have enough fascists in SC, no need to import one more.
— Honest Cock (@CockHonest) April 28, 2019
“Rich white dudes” says the guy who didn’t listen to the story of How Caslen made it to West Point himself. Such a shame you can be presented with real facts, ignore them, and mold a false narrative to fit your needs.
— Burger con·nois·seur (@burgerconasor) April 28, 2019
This is a demonstrably false statement and indicative of the larger delirium surrounding Calsen’s candidacy. Not to mention the myriad of those who assume they have command of all pertinent facts related to the presidential search and can determine the validity of the process.
— Sam Singletary (@SamSingletary) April 26, 2019
He said it in front of a room full of people. Here’s the video: https://t.co/vOThDKtqbq
— Honest Cock (@CockHonest) April 26, 2019
Please give me the minute mark where he says “Sexual assault is caused by drinking.”
— Sam Singletary (@SamSingletary) April 26, 2019
Around the 36 minute mark
— Honest Cock (@CockHonest) April 26, 2019
Yeah, I watched it and didn’t find that quote. He said those exact words? Or was it a more nuanced statement regarding contributing factors?
— Sam Singletary (@SamSingletary) April 26, 2019
Let me go ahead and answer for you. It doesn’t exist. What you’re referring to is around the 32:30 mark and it’s a nuanced statement regarding contributing factors to sexual assault. It never once blames the victims. What you stated was untrue. But, Go Cocks. Beat Clemson.

— KOB (@TheOneTrueKOB) April 26, 2019
Why?
— Connelly-Anne Ragley (@CABar) April 26, 2019
There may be reasons to reject this candidate but do the protestors take the position that alcohol abuse does not contribute to sexual abuse/sexual assault or just plain assault?

Pretty embarrassed to be a @UofSC supporter tonight. @LTGRobertCaslen led West Point for crying out loud. An institution that demands the absolute best out of everyone, no matter their social background. All because he’s a white male. God have mercy on you people.
— ☈ Chris Jackson ☈ (@ChrisJacksonSC) April 27, 2019
I think it had more to do with his comments on sexual assault.
— Dawn (@dawny005) April 27, 2019
While I dont condone anything at all, this is much deeper than that. A lot of people had their pitchforks out for blood the moment it was leaked there were only white men as finalists. Plenty of tweets to back it up on here. It made for an easier excuse rather than his race.
— ☈ Chris Jackson ☈ (@ChrisJacksonSC) April 27, 2019
It wasn’t all white men though. 3 white men and 1 African American. The protest was over no women candidates, but that was a fairly small group. Until Caslen’s comments became public, and the protestors grew in number.
— Dawn (@dawny005) April 27, 2019
Again why is any demographic complaining about the physical attributes of a candidate rather than their moral character and actual qualifications. White, Black, Green, Male, Female.. It shouldn’t matter bc it doesn’t matter. This stuff must stop else our country is toast.
— ☈ Chris Jackson ☈ (@ChrisJacksonSC) April 27, 2019
Because representation does matter. It’s good to have diversity and different perspectives. Having zero woman finalists didn’t bother me much. His comments bothered me a lot.
— Dawn (@dawny005) April 27, 2019
Diversity and different perspectives are good, sure. With that, we haven’t had a POTUS in my lifetime that’s been a true representative of our country. Only the top 1% ever have a chance which is not representative of the other 99%.

If you listened to Caslen today, you’d hear someone who equates diversity with lower standards, which is total BS. @UofSC is one of the top universities for GRADUATION rates of non-whites. No admissions standards were lowered here either. Caslen needs to wake TF up.
